Completed Cancer Mental Health

Improving health status and symptom experience for people living with advanced cancer.

In plain English

AI plain-English summary

A patient with advanced cancer in Yorkshire will have their symptoms—pain, breathlessness, nausea—tracked systematically at every clinic visit, and a palliative care team will act on the results immediately. This matters because decades of research already show that routine symptom monitoring and early palliative care improve quality of life and even survival for people with advanced cancer. Yet most NHS hospitals and community services do not do this consistently. The gap between what is known to work and what actually happens in clinics is wide, and closing it requires more than publishing guidelines—it requires implementation research that tests how to make these changes stick across an entire region. If this programme succeeds, Yorkshire will become a testbed for a new standard of cancer care. Every patient with advanced cancer in the region could expect their symptoms to be assessed and managed as a routine part of their treatment, not an afterthought. The model could then spread to other regions, transforming how palliative care is delivered at scale across the NHS.

View original technical description
Existing research shows convincingly that (1) increasing access to palliative care, (2) implementing routine and systematic assessment and monitoring of symptoms and other concerns, and (3) introducing strategies for improved symptom management, all lead to better outcomes for patients with advanced cancer. However, translating this research evidence into clinical practice at scale requires ambitious and concerted implementation research to deliver these benefits for patients. This programme of implementation research directly addresses these challenges to ensure Yorkshire is a leading region for the highest possible quality palliative care to directly benefit patients with advanced cancer and their families.
