Green hydrogen for Swindon's public access refuelling and multi vehicle use

In plain English

AI plain-English summary

A solar-powered hydrogen refuelling station in Swindon will fuel forklifts, delivery vans, and its own electricity supply in a single integrated system. The project tackles a practical gap: most hydrogen demonstration projects test one vehicle type or one use case. This one combines solar generation, hydrogen storage, a public refuelling station, material handling equipment (forklifts), converted vans, and a fuel cell that powers the station itself—all on a single former car-manufacturing site. The challenge is making the whole system work together under real-world schedules, not just in a lab. If successful, the project will produce a detailed cost and carbon-savings assessment for each application. That data could help fleet operators, local authorities, and logistics companies decide whether hydrogen makes financial and environmental sense for their own mixed-use operations. The work is applied—it tests commercial equipment in daily use, not fundamental science—so the immediate output is a business case, not a breakthrough.

View original technical description
This 2.5 year project, at the Honda Swindon Manufacturing site, delivers solar energy generated hydrogen for the existing public access H2 refuelling station via a commercially available electrolyser into onsite storage, supplied by BOC Ltd to fuel a range of H2FC material handling equipment supplied by Briggs Equipment Ltd, Revolve Technologies converted vans supplied and used by Swindon Commercial Services (SCS) and Commercial Group, along with power for the refuelling station via a fuel cell supplied by ACAL Energy Ltd(AE). The project will focus on the issues of integration of the whole system from the solar power source, to the implications of H2 storage levels with varied use patterns, to the usability of the material handling equipment & converted vans within real working patterns. The project output will provide a detailed assessment of the value of the range of applications from an overall CO2 saving, efficiency, duty cycles and commercial cost benefits.
