Despite advances in therapeutic and diagnostic management in the field of critical care medicine, the incidence and mortality rate of sepsis remains formidably high. The key reason of their ineffectiveness is that no existing treatment can effectively treat the root cause of septic shock, 'endotheliopathy'. Through this BMC project, Glycos Biomedical Ltd UK aims to develop GBM-1511, a heparinoid with reduced anti-coagulant activity, for the treatment of sepsis and endotheliopathy. The proposed cost-effective GBM-1511 drug product will either be given prophylactically or as a treatment to any sepsis-prone or septic patient to stop the progression of the chain reaction that develops in sepsis thereby minimising organ damage and preventing both a poor long-term outcome and death. Based on the existing literature and our initial research, our first target is patients with an APACHE II score of 18+. GBM-1511 is not only expected to be used as a treatment but may also act as an effective prophylactic to prevent the consequences of an endotheliopathy, much like Low Molecular Weight Heparin is currently used to prevent deep venous thrombosis. The project will be a stepping stone towards the UK realising the vision of effectively treating sepsis and other endotheliopathy caused diseases.
