oneTRANSPORT: A oneM2M-based Open Ecosystem for Nationwide Transport Integration

Four English counties will share their transport data on a single open platform, letting travellers plan journeys across buses, trains, and roads as if they were one system. Currently, each local authority runs its own transport data in isolation. A bus app in one county cannot tell you about a train delay in the next. This fragmentation forces travellers to juggle multiple apps and websites, and prevents authorities from optimising the network as a whole. oneTRANSPORT solves that by creating a secure data marketplace based on the oneM2M global standard, where councils can open and trade their data assets. If the platform works, it will let local authorities reduce operating costs, stimulate small businesses that build travel apps, and drive behavioural change—more people using public transport because it is finally easy to plan. The project demonstrates the concept across four contiguous counties, then aims to scale nationwide and eventually integrate other sectors such as energy or health. By proving that an open transport data marketplace is commercially viable, oneTRANSPORT could unlock new funding streams for transport infrastructure, first in the UK and then internationally.
