The UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) is funding a network of universities to train the next generation of bioscience researchers through its Doctoral Training Partnerships (DTPs). This programme addresses a critical gap in the UK’s research pipeline: the need for highly skilled scientists who can tackle complex challenges in biology, agriculture, medicine, and biotechnology. Without a steady stream of trained PhD graduates, the country’s research base would stagnate, and industries that depend on bioscience innovation—from pharmaceuticals to sustainable farming—would struggle to find qualified staff. If this training succeeds, it will produce a cohort of researchers equipped with both deep scientific knowledge and transferable skills in data analysis, communication, and collaboration. These graduates will go on to work in universities, hospitals, agritech companies, and regulatory bodies, quietly strengthening the systems that keep the UK’s bioscience sector competitive.
