South West Biosciences: A Doctoral Training Programme for Bioscience students at Bristol, Bath, Cardiff, Exeter and Rothamsted Research

Five universities and a research institute in South West England and Wales are pooling their resources to train the next generation of bioscience PhD students. This programme addresses a critical gap in the UK’s research pipeline: the need for highly skilled scientists who can tackle complex biological questions that span traditional academic boundaries. By combining the expertise of the Universities of Bristol, Bath, Cardiff, Exeter, and Rothamsted Research, the consortium offers students access to a wider range of supervisors, facilities, and interdisciplinary training than any single institution could provide alone. This matters because many of the biggest challenges in bioscience—from sustainable agriculture to new drug development—require collaboration across fields like genetics, ecology, and computational biology. If successful, this programme will produce a cohort of researchers who are better equipped to move between academic, industrial, and policy roles.
