NLD (Newcastle-Liverpool-Durham) Doctoral Training Partnership 3

The BBSRC is funding a consortium of three universities—Newcastle, Liverpool, and Durham—to train the next generation of bioscience researchers through a coordinated doctoral programme. This matters because the UK’s bioscience sector—spanning agriculture, medicine, biotechnology, and environmental science—depends on a steady pipeline of skilled PhD graduates. Individual universities often lack the breadth of expertise or facilities to cover the full range of modern bioscience. By pooling resources across three institutions, the partnership gives students access to a wider set of supervisors, specialist equipment, and interdisciplinary training than any single university could provide alone. If the programme succeeds, it will produce researchers equipped to tackle complex problems that cross traditional boundaries—such as sustainable food production, antimicrobial resistance, or synthetic biology. These are not abstract concerns: they affect how food is grown, how drugs are developed, and how ecosystems are managed. The partnership also strengthens the research base in the North of England, spreading capacity beyond the traditional Oxford-Cambridge-London axis. This is primarily a training and capacity-building initiative rather than a specific discovery project. Its impact will be measured in the careers it launches and the research those graduates later conduct.
