Salford IMRC Renewal

A UK research centre that has spent five years reshaping how buildings and cities are designed, built, and lived in is now seeking renewal to cement its global reputation and deliver practical results for industry. The Salford Centre for Research and Innovation (SCRI) brings together engineers, architects, social scientists, and computer scientists from three University of Salford institutes. Its core problem is that the built environment—the homes, offices, and infrastructure people use every day—often fails to meet human needs efficiently or sustainably. The centre’s work addresses this gap by integrating research on construction methods, building performance, and how people actually interact with spaces. If renewed, the centre will continue collaborating with more than 60 industrial and academic partners internationally. The potential impact is on the systems that quietly keep society running: energy use in buildings, construction waste, transport networks, and the long-term durability of infrastructure. By translating fundamental research into practical innovations, the centre aims to improve how UK construction and property sectors operate, reducing costs and environmental harm while making buildings work better for the people inside them.
