The University of York is training over 20 new PhD researchers each year in chemistry, computer science, electronics, mathematics, and physics, backed by more than £500 million in facilities. This Doctoral Training Partnership addresses the gap between fundamental scientific discovery and the skilled workforce needed to turn those discoveries into real-world technologies. If successful, these researchers will go on to develop practical advances in areas most people rarely think about: faster and more secure communications through quantum networks, smarter algorithms for decision-making in finance and logistics, cleaner energy from fusion reactors, and more efficient chemical manufacturing processes. The interdisciplinary nature of the programme means breakthroughs often emerge at the boundaries between traditional fields, such as mathematical biology or plasma physics applied to environmental challenges. Much of the training is curiosity-driven, preparing students to explore fundamental questions in pure mathematics or theoretical physics. Past fundamental research in these same departments has led to unexpected applications—for example, the mathematics behind error-correcting codes now underpins every digital communication system.

As a member of the Russell Group of research-intensive universities, the University of York is committed to strengthening our position as one of the world's premier institutions for inspirational and life-changing research. Our EPSRC DTP supports world leading research across Chemistry, Computer Science, Electronics, Mathematics and Physics departments. Our research is highly interdisciplinary and projects are often carried out in collaboration with other departments, such as Biology or Environment, where these intersect with EPSRC cross-cutting themes.
