DTA - University of Nottingham

The University of Nottingham will train the next generation of doctoral researchers across engineering and physical sciences through a Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP). This funding supports postgraduate students—the people who actually carry out the day-to-day research in UK labs and workshops. Without a steady pipeline of trained doctoral graduates, the country’s research base would stagnate. The DTP model addresses this by providing structured, multi-year training that goes beyond a single PhD project, covering technical skills, professional development, and collaboration with industry. If the programme succeeds, it will produce scientists and engineers equipped to tackle real-world problems in areas such as energy storage, manufacturing efficiency, digital infrastructure, and medical imaging. Many of these graduates will move into industry, academia, or public-sector roles, quietly strengthening the systems—power grids, supply chains, communications networks—that keep society running. The grant itself does not fund a specific research question; it funds the people who will ask and answer those questions over the coming years.
