The UK Research Councils are funding a network of Doctoral Training Partnerships that will train the next generation of scientists and engineers across the country. This grant supports postgraduate education rather than a specific research project. The problem it addresses is straightforward: the UK needs a steady pipeline of highly skilled researchers to maintain its science and engineering base. Without sustained investment in doctoral training, the country risks losing its competitive edge in fields from advanced manufacturing to quantum computing. The impact is indirect but fundamental. Every PhD student trained through these partnerships will go on to work in universities, industry, or public sector labs. They will design better batteries, write more efficient code, develop new medical imaging techniques, or improve water treatment systems. The training itself is the output—the breakthroughs will come later, from the people it produces. This is not curiosity-driven science. It is infrastructure for science: a deliberate investment in human capital rather than in a specific discovery. The success metric is not a paper or a prototype, but a cohort of researchers equipped to solve problems that may not yet exist.
