This grant funds the training of doctoral researchers at Imperial College London through the EPSRC Doctoral Training Partnership. Postgraduate training is the engine of the UK’s research workforce. Without sustained investment in PhD students, the pipeline of skilled scientists and engineers needed to drive innovation in industry, academia, and public services would dry up. This grant addresses that gap by providing the core infrastructure for recruiting, supporting, and developing the next generation of researchers. The impact is systemic. A well-trained doctoral cohort feeds directly into sectors that keep society running: advanced manufacturing, energy systems, digital infrastructure, healthcare technologies, and defence. These researchers will go on to lead projects in both fundamental and applied science, often in areas with no immediate commercial application but with long-term potential—much as past fundamental research in quantum mechanics or materials science eventually enabled modern electronics and medical imaging. This is primarily a training investment, not a specific research programme. Its success is measured not by a single discovery, but by the breadth and quality of the people it produces.
