International Centre for Mathematical Sciences 2024

The International Centre for Mathematical Sciences (ICMS) in Edinburgh will host workshops and collaborative projects that bring mathematicians together to solve problems. This grant covers travel, accommodation, and operational costs for these events. Mathematics underpins almost every modern system, from encryption and logistics to climate modelling and drug design. Yet mathematical progress depends on researchers meeting face-to-face to share ideas, challenge assumptions, and spark new lines of inquiry. The ICMS, alongside the Isaac Newton Institute, forms a critical part of the UK’s infrastructure for this kind of high-level collaboration. Without dedicated venues and funding for travel, many of these exchanges simply would not happen. The impact is indirect but pervasive. A workshop on network theory might improve how data flows through the internet; a collaboration on fluid dynamics could refine weather prediction models; a discussion on optimisation could tighten supply chains. Much of the work is fundamental science—curiosity-driven mathematics with no immediate application. But historically, advances in pure mathematics have enabled cryptography, search algorithms, and medical imaging. By supporting the conditions for mathematical discovery, this grant helps maintain the intellectual pipeline that quietly keeps modern society running.
