Industrial CASE Account - Bangor University 2024

This grant does not fund a specific research project. Instead, it supports a training partnership between Bangor University and industrial companies, allowing PhD students to work on commercially relevant science and engineering problems. The scheme addresses a persistent gap between academic research and industrial need. Many PhD graduates have deep theoretical knowledge but little experience applying it in a business setting, while companies struggle to recruit researchers who can hit the ground running. By embedding doctoral students directly with industrial partners, the programme ensures their training is shaped by real-world problems from day one. If successful, the partnership will produce a cohort of researchers who can move fluidly between academia and industry. For the companies involved, this means faster uptake of new materials, processes, or technologies developed during the studentships. For the wider UK economy, it strengthens the pipeline of skilled researchers in sectors such as advanced manufacturing, energy, and environmental technology—areas where the gap between discovery and deployment often slows progress. The immediate output is trained people, not a specific invention, but those people will go on to design the inventions of the next decade.
