This grant funds a network of university partnerships to train the next generation of social science researchers across the UK. The problem is straightforward: the UK needs a steady pipeline of skilled researchers who can tackle complex social and economic questions—from inequality and education to public health and regional development. Without coordinated, high-quality doctoral training, the country risks losing its capacity to produce evidence that informs policy and business decisions. The impact is structural rather than immediate. This training grant does not fund a single experiment or field study. Instead, it builds the infrastructure for future research by supporting PhD students and their supervisors. Over time, these trained researchers will move into universities, government, think tanks, and industry, where their work can shape how public money is spent, how services are delivered, and how society understands itself. This is a capacity-building investment in people, not a specific discovery project. Its success will be measured not by a single breakthrough, but by the quality and breadth of the research community it sustains over a decade or more.
