This grant funds doctoral training centres, not a specific research project. It provides the infrastructure for universities to train the next generation of social scientists through PhD programmes. The problem this addresses is straightforward: the UK needs skilled researchers who can investigate complex social and economic questions—from how children learn to how labour markets function. Without sustained investment in training, the pipeline of experts who can conduct rigorous, policy-relevant social science dries up. The impact is indirect but fundamental. Every ESRC-funded PhD student who goes on to work in government, think tanks, universities, or the private sector carries the analytical skills needed to design better public services, evaluate what works in education, or understand shifting employment patterns. The training centres ensure this expertise exists in the first place. This is not curiosity-driven science in the traditional sense. It is capacity-building: creating the human infrastructure that makes all other social science research possible. Without trained researchers, no social science gets done at all.
