DTP Bid Led by King's College London

King’s College London will lead a consortium to train the next generation of biomedical researchers through a Doctoral Training Partnership funded by the Medical Research Council. This grant addresses a critical bottleneck in the UK research pipeline: the need for skilled scientists who can tackle complex health challenges. Without sustained investment in postgraduate training, the country risks losing its competitive edge in medical research and failing to translate laboratory discoveries into treatments for patients. The partnership provides structured funding for PhD studentships across multiple institutions, ensuring that talented early-career researchers receive rigorous training in fundamental science, quantitative methods, and translational medicine. If successful, this programme will produce a cohort of researchers equipped to work across academia, industry, and the NHS. Their work could accelerate the development of new diagnostics, therapies, and public health interventions—improving systems that most people never see, such as drug discovery pipelines, clinical trial infrastructure, and disease surveillance networks. The impact is not immediate or tangible in daily life, but it is structural: without such training grants, the entire biomedical research enterprise would gradually lose the people who keep it running.
