E4: Edinburgh Earth, Ecology and Environment Doctoral Training Partnership

This grant funds a cohort of PhD students to train in environmental science, ecology, and Earth systems research. The problem it addresses is straightforward: the UK needs a steady pipeline of skilled researchers who can tackle complex environmental challenges—from biodiversity loss to climate change to sustainable land use. Without sustained investment in postgraduate training, the country risks a shortage of experts capable of conducting the fundamental and applied research that underpins environmental policy, conservation, and resource management. The potential impact is long-term and structural. Over the course of the doctoral training partnership, dozens of early-career scientists will complete PhDs, producing new knowledge about how ecosystems function, how landscapes change, and how human activity interacts with the natural world. Some of this research may directly inform conservation strategies, agricultural practices, or climate adaptation plans. Much of it will be fundamental science—building a deeper understanding of Earth’s systems that could, in time, lead to unexpected applications in fields like carbon accounting, pollution control, or disaster forecasting. This is primarily a training investment, not a single research project. Its success will be measured not by a specific discovery, but by the quality and breadth of the scientists it produces.
