NERC is shifting how it pays for its research ships and marine equipment, earmarking £14.9 million annually from 2017/18 to cover fixed costs like ownership and maintenance, while keeping ship time free for scientists. This matters because the old funding model mixed fixed costs with variable science programme money, creating uncertainty. The new model separates the unavoidable costs of keeping ships and the National Marine Equipment Pool (NMEP) ready to go from the costs of individual research cruises. That gives NERC and its National Capability laboratories a stable budget for infrastructure, while scientists still apply competitively for ship time without paying directly. If the model works, it means more predictable planning for ship refits, crew training, and equipment upgrades. Researchers can focus on the science—from ocean circulation to marine ecosystems—without worrying about whether the ship will be available. The change affects a quiet but critical part of UK marine science: the physical infrastructure that lets oceanographers and climate scientists gather data at sea. Without reliable ships and instruments, much of the UK’s marine research would simply stop.
