Centre for doctoral training in sustainable management of UK marine resources (SuMMeR)

The NERC Centre for Doctoral Training in Sustainable Management of UK Marine Resources (SuMMeR) will train a new generation of PhD students to tackle the competing demands on Britain’s coastal and offshore waters. This matters because the UK’s marine environment is under growing pressure from offshore wind farms, fishing, shipping, aquaculture, and conservation targets—all of which must coexist within the same limited sea space. Currently, there is a shortage of researchers who can integrate ecological science, oceanography, economics, and policy to manage these trade-offs effectively. SuMMeR addresses this skills gap directly by providing interdisciplinary doctoral training. If successful, the centre will produce graduates who can design and implement evidence-based marine management strategies. This could improve how the UK balances renewable energy expansion with protecting fish stocks and seabed habitats, and how it adapts marine planning to climate change. The impact will be felt in the systems that quietly keep society running: energy supply chains, food security from fisheries, and the regulatory frameworks that govern coastal development. Because this is a training grant, the primary output is skilled people rather than immediate scientific discoveries—but those people will shape marine policy and industry practice for decades.
