A knowledge-to-action toolbox, being developed, from a basic α-version, over a maturing β-version to an advanced full version in a co-design process, is the project’s main outcome. This toolbox is an evidence-based decision support framework designed to help local authorities identify and adopt the options best suited to their specific requirements. The toolbox will equip local and regional authorities with standardized, science-based methods and data, reducing their reliance on fragmented external studies. This empowers them to take faster and more informed decisions while ensuring alignment with the EU goals for a cleaner ocean. The toolbox will integrate a wide range of solution types into a single, practical platform for the detection, collection, and prevention of marine litter and (micro)plastics before entering sea and ocean. The knowledge-to-action toolbox will be designed as an open, science-based resource, fully aligned with FAIR data principles, to ensure accessibility for public authorities, researchers, and society. To maximise interoperability and long-term impact, the toolbox will connect with the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC). This guarantees that results are not only available to local authorities but also integrated into EOSC’s federated infrastructure, enabling reuse by other EU projects, international science-policy processes, and innovation communities.
