Contested Geographies of Extractivism in Europe and Latin America

CONTESTED_EXTRACTION is a Europe-Latin America staff-exchange network that investigates how “green” transitions reconfigure extractive regimes and their territorial effects. The project will (i) map multi-scalar extractive value chains, from sites of extraction to ports, processing hubs, firms and finance; (ii) analyse governance and conflicts, tracing how laws, corporate strategies and public policies shape distributional impacts on communities, with attention to gendered and Indigenous perspectives; and (iii) co-develop reparative pathways with civil society and public authorities to reduce harm and support just transitions.We deliver this through interdisciplinary, intersectoral, cross-country secondments (up to 360 person-months), structured training bundles (chain/finance tracing; GIS & data ethics; research-creation & communication; co-production & option appraisal), and a shared open data infrastructure (harmonised GIS/database, reproducible workflows). Comparative case lines (e.g., critical minerals, agro-commodities) are linked to policy labs that prototype actionable options (procurement criteria, territorial safeguards, compensation/repair schemes, demand-side measures).Outputs include open tools and datasets, case syntheses and typologies, policy briefs aligned with the European Green Deal and the Critical Raw Materials Act, and transmedia storytelling to broaden uptake. Staff gain transferable skills and durable networks within and beyond academia; communities and public bodies gain evidence and tested options to advance just and sustainable transitions.
