Establishment of a Centre for Clinical Infectious Diseases Research at the University of Cape Town (Wellcome-UCT-CCIDR).

A new centre at the University of Cape Town will train African clinical and basic scientists to work together on infectious diseases, rather than in separate silos. Infectious diseases such as HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria remain major killers across sub-Saharan Africa, yet the researchers who study the underlying biology of these pathogens often have little contact with the doctors who treat patients, or with the epidemiologists who track outbreaks. This disconnect slows the translation of laboratory discoveries into better diagnostics, treatments, and prevention strategies. The centre aims to break down those barriers by improving shared laboratory and clinical infrastructure, creating competitive entry-level research positions for early-career scientists, and running intensive training courses in mathematical biology and statistics. If successful, the centre will produce a new generation of African researchers who can move fluidly between the lab bench and the clinic. It will also build regional capacity by linking collaborators in Malawi, Zambia, and Zimbabwe through annual meetings and joint training, strengthening the continent’s ability to respond to infectious disease threats. The project is primarily about building human and institutional infrastructure rather than pursuing a specific scientific question, but that infrastructure is a prerequisite for the fundamental and applied research that will follow.
