The Southeast Asian MOPs work on the major infectious disease killers in the most populated area of the world. Through high quality clinical and applied laboratory research across a range of disciplines, they have made major contributions to medicine. The Thailand MOP concentrates on diseases of the rural poor. It has defined the current management of malaria, melioidosis, leptospirosis, scrub typhus, and murine typhus, and contributed significantly to the treatment of cryptococcal meningitis an d severe influenza. Close integration with host institutions, a broad capability, and the capacity to respond rapidly and effectively to emerging threats, has placed the unit in the forefront of research on rural febrile illnesses, the main cause of hospital admission in tropical countries, and drug-resistant malaria, the main threat to global malaria control and elimination. We have created a network of like-minded research collaborations across Asia and Africa, and we foster an international c adre of physicians and scientists with a common goal of providing immediate and measurable practical solutions to the major health problems confronting the developing world. We believe this multinational, integrated, adaptive, and evolving model based on sound science and clinical excellence is the most effective means of delivering research to improve health.
