Within five years, one type of Multi-Modal Surgical Instrument and one Active Implantable Medical Device produced by the Facility will be evaluated in patients for the first time. In the longer term, the key impact will be improved quality of life for patients and carers, possibly accompanied with reduced healthcare costs. Additional benefits will be accelerated translation of Wellcome and EPSRC funded research as we create a clear translation pathway; economic impact in the UK via the existence of a centre of excellence on complex medical devices manufacture supporting SMEs and enabling the next step in the translation process, the larger scale production of the devices so they are available to patients; and the possibility to introduce truly innovative manufacturing processes to enable the production of devices practically inconceivable with the current methods.
