MediaCity in Salford is turning itself into a living laboratory where businesses, universities, and local government will build and test immersive technologies—virtual reality, augmented reality, and the tools for the emerging metaverse—in real-world settings. The pandemic damaged the innovation ecosystem around MediaCity, weakening the collaboration between tech companies, creative industries, and academic researchers that had made it a national hub for digital and creative work. This project aims to rebuild that ecosystem by creating a dedicated space where businesses can design, develop, and test new immersive solutions for entertainment, gaming, education, health, manufacturing, and the built environment. The hub will run R&D programmes, innovation labs, and community events focused on live industry needs. If successful, the hub will boost productivity and economic growth in Greater Manchester by helping businesses seize opportunities in immersive technologies. It will also address health and employment inequalities in Salford and across the UK through outreach and targeted research projects that deliver social value. The programme aims to attract private R&D investment that exceeds the initial public contributions, creating a self-sustaining innovation cluster.
