Completed Clean Energy Engineering

An AI controlled, optimised renewable energy storage system using second-life EV batteries and solar, to replace fossil fuel generators

In plain English

AI plain-English summary

An AI-controlled system will repurpose old electric vehicle batteries to store solar power and replace diesel generators in Uganda. This matters because renewable energy sources like solar only generate power intermittently—when the sun is shining. Without effective storage, that energy is lost, forcing reliance on fossil fuel generators for backup. The project tackles two problems at once: the growing waste stream of retired EV batteries, and the lack of affordable, clean energy storage for off-grid communities. If successful, the system could change how energy is managed in places without reliable grid connections. Instead of burning diesel, a school, clinic, or small business could run on stored solar power, using batteries that would otherwise be discarded. The AI control optimises the trade-off between battery lifespan, energy output, and return on investment, making the system practical for real-world use. The demonstration will install three systems in Uganda, paired with solar panels. This is a practical engineering project with a clear target: prove that second-life EV batteries, managed by AI, can replace fossil fuel generators in the field.

This project develops and demonstrates an AI controlled modular, scalable Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), which repurposes end-of-life EV batteries for energy storage. The developed BESS will support the roll out of intermittent renewable energy generation both on and off grid, using advanced AI control to optimise for utility, lifetime and RoI. The demonstration will install 3 systems in Uganda, working alongside solar panels to replace existing fossil fuel generators.
