DTP - University of Edinburgh

The University of Edinburgh is training the next generation of researchers through a Doctoral Training Partnership funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council. This matters because the UK needs a steady pipeline of skilled scientists and engineers to keep its research base competitive. Without sustained investment in postgraduate training, the country risks losing expertise in fields that underpin everything from computing to manufacturing. This grant provides the funding structure for studentships—paid positions that allow PhD students to focus on research rather than worrying about how to pay rent. If this succeeds, it will produce dozens of highly trained specialists who go on to work in universities, labs, and industry. The impact is indirect but essential: these are the people who will design better batteries, write more efficient code, or develop new materials. The grant itself does not fund a specific experiment or discovery. It funds the people who will make those discoveries. Similar training partnerships have historically produced researchers who went on to develop MRI technology, fibre optics, and modern computer processors—none of which existed as practical applications when the original students started their PhDs.
