DTP - University of Glasgow

The University of Glasgow is using EPSRC funding to train the next generation of doctoral researchers in engineering and physical sciences. This grant supports a Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP), which provides structured postgraduate training rather than funding a specific research project. The DTP model allows universities to recruit and train PhD students across a broad range of topics, from fundamental science to applied engineering. Without such partnerships, the UK would lack a coordinated pipeline for producing highly skilled researchers capable of tackling complex scientific and technological challenges. If successful, this training programme will produce dozens of PhD graduates over its lifetime. These researchers will go on to work in academia, industry, and public-sector roles, contributing to advances in areas such as energy systems, manufacturing, computing, and healthcare technologies. The DTP also helps maintain the UK’s research capacity by ensuring that fundamental science—work that may not have immediate commercial applications—continues to receive skilled practitioners. Past investments in similar training schemes have underpinned breakthroughs in fields from quantum computing to medical imaging, demonstrating the long-term value of sustained doctoral education.
