ESRC is handing institutions a flexible pot of money—called an Impact Acceleration Account—to turn research findings into real-world change, fast. Most research funding is tied to specific projects, leaving little room to adapt when unexpected opportunities arise. This matters because a breakthrough in the lab or a sudden policy need can vanish if there is no cash to act on it. IAAs solve that: they give universities the agility to invest in impact activities—such as spinout companies, public engagement, or partnerships with government and industry—that existing grants do not cover. If this succeeds, the result is not a single discovery but a faster, more responsive pipeline from research to everyday life. A new diagnostic tool could reach clinics sooner. A behavioural insight could shape a government programme within months, not years. IAAs also support infrastructure that rarely makes headlines: better knowledge-exchange offices, prototyping facilities, and training for researchers to communicate with non-specialists. The funding is deliberately open-ended, so the specific impacts will depend on each institution's strategy and the unforeseen opportunities that arise.
