We envision that the project will improve the quality of care and patient outcomes in ICUs. Initially this will be in ICUs of the network, but since the project provides a scalable approach which is implementable throughout the region, in the longer term the project will hopefully contribute to improvement of ICU care and patient survival in all LMICs in the region. Since ICU care is becoming increasingly available in LMICs in South and Southeast Asia, but case fatality in these ICUs remain high, improvement of ICU care can benefit the lives of many critically ill patients. In addition we hope that in the long-term the electronic ICU registry will be rolled out in ICUs beyond the network. This has the potential to contribute to more data driven ICU practice, to provide a planning tool for policy makers, and to generate for the first time reliable epidemiological data on causes of critical illness in the region. Lastly, we hope that the new ICU network will continue after the lifetime of the project, and will provide a long-lasting platform for large setting-adapted ICU clinical trials in the region.
